PILATES Pioneered by Joseph Pilates (Pi-lar-tees) in the 1920’s, this unique program of exercises has been behind many of the worlds best performers of dance and theatre for many years. Athletes are also well represented on the list, but it is only in the last 15 years that Pilates has been "discovered" by the medical community as a legitimate form of high level rehabilitation for injury management, and as a form of training for high level performance and injury prevention. There is now a growing body of research which supports training of proximal stabilisation of the pelvis and shoulder girdle for the management of spinal injuries and other peripheral injuries, eg. shoulder, knee, groin. It is quite common now to see Pilates classes in some form offered by many gymnasiums. Clinical Pilates is a programme that has been developed by Australian Physiotherapists. It is individually tailored and develops functional dynamic stability within the needs of the individual. At times, the stability work begins statically and needs then to be progressed to dynamic work. At Northside Physiotherapy we combine Real-time Ultrasound and Clinical Pilates to achieve the correct muscle activation pattern of the deep stabilisers – transversus abdominus and deep multifidus. We also use Clinical Pilates as a preventative or supplementary training as an adjunct to normal training to help improve performance and correct muscle "imbalances" for everyday exercise and activity.
